Upcoming events and what's up in art so far

Hello Families!

Advisory and General Art Room Stuff

Here are the upcoming events for 6th grade this October...

  • 10/5 No School
  • 10/7 Picture Day
  • 10/10 No School, Inservice Day
  • 10/21 Spirit Rally and 6th Grade Mixer
  • 10/24 No School, Inservice Day

We've created a coloring bulletin board for anyone in the building that want to use. It makes a great way to relax or regroup. All are welcome;)

6th Grade Art
Students have finished their Heraldry Projects and they really did a great job while learning a bit about their family's heritage. I've learned a bunch more about their hobbies as well. Ask your student to share their project and their paragraph they wrote about which of their countries they hope to visit someday.
We just introduced the "Crushed Can" project and I'm impressed with their creative ideas so far.

8th Grade Sculpture (And Study Hall)
Students have finished their cardboard sculptures and they are on display in the main hallway. We had a battle of tanks, some folks did characters or their initials. Here's a pick of the display and some in progress shots. Ask your child to show you their reflection video. Next up is the Wyeth Wire project. We have watched some videos about local artists as well as the Wyeth artists. Students are choosing their artist to emulate and will begin to construct their armature for the wire sculpture.

7th Grade Art
This quarter we started with printmaking and the theme is sugar skulls. We are finishing up printing this week. Your students were very creative and are really enjoying the process. I hope they share their prints with you. Ask to see their MyStory for more details. They should have 4 final prints: Make your own paper (collage, painted or splattered), a modified print, a black/white print and a color print. Next up is clay!

Welcome to Patton's 2022-2023 School Year!

Let me introduce myself, Mrs. Sherri Schultz, with my new door poster. As you can see I am an art teacher, mom of Jake (16 at Henderson HS), mom of 3 furry babies, a wife and we love baseball as a family.

I am very excited to welcome in a new Advisory this year and start off my blog as a form of communication to our families and students. You can expect to find updates on the ongoings of the classroom and important information for upcoming events. I also like to post photos so you have a glimpse into our classroom.

Our Advisory group starts the day together and ends the day together. In the morning we take attendance, watch HawkTV and get ready for the day. Chrome books should not be used during this 9 minute period.
Hawktime is the last period of the day and varies on the activity depending on the day of the week. Monday is for team building, Tuesday through Thursday are for music programs/study hall and Fridays are for fun activities. We dismiss for busses from Hawktime.

To start us off, here is a graphic of the 6th grade schedule. We will be talking with our students this week about the schedule and when the best times are to visit our lockers. Lockers can seem overwhelming to a 6th grader but I promise we will get through it together. I am always there to help out until we master the combination! If your student would like to look at a map or the bus map, they are available in the Canvas Course "Advisory."
Please don't forget the items requested in the summer letter for B Team. Here's a link

Please make sure you review the cell phone and Air Pod policy with your student.  Please Click Here to view policy.

And finally here are some upcoming dates to know:

8/29 First day of school for students

9/5 No School

9/15 CFPMS Back to School Night 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Again, WELCOME, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns this year. I am very excited to meet your student! Also, if you want to let me know anything specific about you, your family or child, I would love to hear from you.

LET'S GO HAWKS!

6th Grade Art:

We are wrapping up the clay house projects and have started our final project... crushed can art. Please send in a box (shoe box is perfect) to take home finished houses.

8th Grade Art:

Lots of exciting things happening in art for 8th grade. We went on a field trip to the Brandywine River Museum to end our art history unit. The kids were spectacular and had a lot of fun. Ask them how they enjoyed the trip and what is their favorite piece of art. Traditional art finished up portraits and koi fish. They started color theory where they pick a famous painting, redraw it and apply color theory and drawing techniques into 3 main zones. Sculpture has finished up cardboard and is now working on found object sculptures. Mr. Marshall, who is a found object artist, came to show us some of his creations and techniques for assembling sculptures. The kids loved having a guest artist who is also one of our teachers.

7th Grade Art:

We have finished glazing our food/fashion clay projects and they are starting to come out of the kiln looking completely fabulous! Meanwhile, kids are back to the printmaking Holi project and are nearing the end. Most have started cutting their lino plates and will be ready to start printing soon. Please send in a box (shoe box is perfect) to take home finished clay projects.

Art Room Fun and PSSA information

Advisory:

This coming week we begin PSSA's. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are ELA testing. As Dr. Dissinger's message home said students will test in the morning and have an extended recess with lunches those days.  Your child should bring an independent reading book with them in case they finish earlier than the end of the testing window. They will not be able to have their electronics (phones, computers, smart watches) on them until after the testing window is over and they travel to their first class. My suggestion is that students store electronics in their lockers.

This past Friday Patton students participated in earth day clubs. My room was the looms for making sleeping mats for the homeless from recycled plastic bags. Ask your child what activity they chose.

6th Grade:

6th grade will finish up Heraldry this week and learn calligraphy. Here is a shot of their warmups out of the kiln and ready to become shiny.

8th Grade:

Both Traditional and Sculpture classes had their clay projects fired over break and will glaze (color) them next week during PSSA days. Traditional started their drawing unit this week with Stravinsky. The point of the exercise was to learn to draw what they actually see and not what they know in their head. And we moved onto portraits. Ask them about the ins and outs of drawing the human head! Sculpture started their cardboard unit. The class is pretty split on technique. Half are building using cups and the other half are using the other building techniques such as stacking, slotting, piercing and scoring.

7th Grade:

Students are finishing up their drawings and will learn how to build with clay their food/fashion idea this coming week. We are all excited to play with clay;)

Our Patton Planner Contest Entrees

Twenty 6th and 7th graders submitted their art over the past 2 weeks for the next year's planner. We won't know the winner of the planner contest for awhile. It is usually announced in early June. The school will also be choosing one for our postcard next year from among this lot. Exciting! Enjoy the fabulous entrees below.

6th Grade ART

6th grade has been working on their Heraldry projects and are getting ready to trace their work onto the good paper when we return to school. They have also added color to their clay warmups and shiny glaze to their clay cookies. I put both in the kiln today.

8th Grade ART

We have started off both Traditional Art and Sculpture Art with a vote for the choice clay project. Here are some shots of the kids working on their creations. All projects have been put into the kiln today and will be ready for color when we return from break.

7th Grade Art

We are getting ready for our clay food or fashion project. Kiddos are finishing up their drawings so we can start the actual clay soon after break:)
