It’s pretty spooky in the ARTroom - Oct 29th

Advisory/ School pictures should have gone home this week. Check the backpacks. Retakes will be November 16th! Also another thing to put on your calendar is the student led conferences. They will be held the week of Thanksgiving. More to come on those… I will send out a sign up genius once I have more details. AND…. We were pretty spooky here for Halloween today. Actually, maybe not spooky but super fun. Enjoy your weekend!

6th Grade We are finishing up Heraldry. This week we learned how to write in calligraphy and applied our last names to our shield. Some folks also made videos about their clay warmups and houses. Next up is our crushed can project. We have a couple students that started that too. We all work at different paces so our room has a few different things going on at the same time. Also, I took a couple picts of the halloween costumes.

7th Grade/ Students are having fun carving sugar skull designs into their linocuts. They are also splattering paper and printing in different colors. Only a few classes left to finish up!

8th Grade Sculpture Most are finished glazing clay choice projects and are going into the kiln. Famous Artist wire sculptures are almost finished as well. Can you tell which famous artists they chose? Next up and final project is the Koi fish watercolor painting. Only a few days left of the quarter:(

Clubs Today for Halloween, we are doing a fun Gimkit that Mrs. DiGregorio created today.

Exciting stuff going on in the ARTroom / Oct 22

Advisory/ We have a new student! Meet Daniel. Our advisory has welcomed him and has shown themselves to be great helpers getting Daniel to his classes this week. I’m so proud of them:) Also this friday was a Pink Out day. Some of our friends showed their pink.

6th Grade finish glazing their houses and warmups and they are going into the kiln. We also worked on some Colonial slip trailing techniques and applied them to cookie cutter clay pieces. And finally this week we went back to work on heraldry. Students took their rough draft and traced onto good paper using the light boxes. Then they traced out with a sharpie and started color with color pencils. Next up, calligraphy!

7th Grade/ Food sculptures are mostly out of the kiln and we are all back to working on printmaking projects, sugar skulls. Students have completed their designs and are working on transferring them to a lino plate and cutting out their designs. Next week we will start printing!

8th Grade Sculpture are finishing up choice projects. I have shown the clay projects getting loaded into the kiln and students were also completing the found object projects. Everyone is back to wire now. Here’s a photo of the designs/colors going on the armatures. By next week you should probably start to recognize what famous artist they chose.

What’s happening in the ARTroom?

Advisory had their spirit last week. Thursday with Patton colors purple/gold/spirit wear and on Friday color wars wearing blue. Today we voted for student council officers. And clubs are actually starting today. Your child chose from many fun clubs through Canvas. They are pumped up for clubs since we missed them last week! I’m hosting the Service Art Club. Today they cut up plastic bags to string together to make plarn (plastic + yarn) to help make sleeping mats for the homeless community.

6th Grade worked on heraldry last week and this week we glazed (painted) our clay warm ups and houses. Next week we will learn some slip trailing glaze techniques and make our clay creations shiny if they choose to.

7th Grade students have been glazing their food sculptures last week and we fired them in the kiln last night. This week they have been finishing up glazing and practicing our cutting skills for the sugar skull printmaking project. Sorry the kiln was too hot to open for a photo:( I’ll include one next time.

8th Grade Sculpture started their choice projects last week and finishing them up this week. For those that chose clay, they started the wire armature for our upcoming Famous Artist wire project.

Okay! So school has been going great so far in art room 103. Here's some updates on our happenings:

Advisory is getting along great. They are crazy, sweet, quiet and truly like each other. We've started our “First 10” during Hawk time which is either GMM or reading a book for pleasure for the first 10 minutes. Kiddos signed up for clubs that start this Friday, October 8th. And... we survived picture day. There wasn't a class photo so we took one in the hallway:)

6th Grade started out with clay warmups. They chose from creating a pinch pot baby, bathing beauty or a tray. When they mastered the 3 building techniques (pinch pot, coil and slab) we moved onto clay houses. They are looking marvelous!!! Each house needed to have 5 unique building qualities and boy did the kids get creative! All the clay is in the kiln and should be ready for color next week.

We've since started a 2D project, Heraldry, in the meantime. We've finished up our thumbnails or idea sketches this week. More to come on those.

7th Grade started out with clay. It was so great to get back into school and have our students in the room together creating, getting messy and collaborating. They did some research for their plate of food ideas and did some great drawings. This week we are glazing the projects. Stay tuned…

8th Grade Sculpture started out with cardboard sculptures. Students chose to create either a cup method letter/logo or hand build something. Check out how they paper machéd their sculptures or built their fabulous sculptures. All the kiddos did a great job! After cardboard we moved onto our art history unit focusing on the Wyeth family and other Brandywine area artists. This week we started drawings for our choice projects. More to come…
